Writing under the pseudonym of Acid Flask, he criticised several government policies, including the A*STAR scholarship system and Yeo’s justifications of them. He also agreed to his remarks being reproduced in the Electric New Paper. Yeo sent him several e-mails demanding that he delete all blogs mentioning him or A*STAR and threatening legal action if he did not.A few days later, Acid Flask shut down the blog and posted a message of apology to Yeo in its place. Other Singapore blogs that had reproduced the remarks quickly afterwards posted apologies or themselves closed down. Receive email alertslast_img read more

Abducted journalist and rights activist now faces possible death penalty on terrorist plot charge

first_img Zimbabwean journalist Hopewell Chin’ono denied bail Reports Receive email alerts Organisation ZimbabweAfrica News RSF_en Help by sharing this information to go further Zimbabwean court must free imprisoned journalist who is unwell News The 2020 pandemic has challenged press freedom in Africa Reporters Without Borders condemns the “unacceptable behaviour” of the Zimbabwean authorities in kidnapping journalist and human rights activist Jestina Mukoko three weeks ago, holding her incommunicado and now accusing her and several other members of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) of a terrorist plot to overthrow President Robert Mugabe. She faces a possible death sentence.“The accusations brought against Mukoko are absurd and baseless,” Reporters Without Borders said. “We call on the Zimbabwean authorities to free her and withdraw all the charges at once. Coming after a series of kidnappings, the prosecution of these opposition activists has all the hallmarks of a government conspiracy to sabotage the power-sharing agreement.”The Zimbabwean police brought Mukoko and nine other human rights activists before a Harare court on 24 December on charges of organising a Zimbabwean police officer’s trip to Botswana to receive military training there with a view to overthrowing Mugabe. Their lawyers, who have not been allowed to see them, said they risked being sentenced to death. The ten activists are now being held in Chikurubi high security prison although a high court judge ordered on 24 December that they be taken to hospital. They are now being held under a pre-trial detention order that will require renewal on 29 December.A former presenter for the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) and then the privately-owned Voice of The People (VOP), Mukoko was kidnapped from her home in Norton (40 km west of Harare) at around 5 a.m. on 3 December by some 15 men in plain clothes. Thereafter, there had been no word of Mukoko until her court appearance. The police had said nothing, aside from denying any knowledge of her whereabouts.Mukoko heads the Zimbabwe Peace Project, a human rights organisation that has provided constant information about this year’s political violence in Zimbabwe, where some 200 supporters of opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai’s MDC have been killed since the party’s successful challenge to the ruling ZANU-PF in last March’s general elections.Refusing to recognise its defeat, the ruling party signed a power-sharing deal with the opposition in September but the two sides have failed to agree on its implementation, in particular, the allocation of key ministries. Tsvangirai threatened to pull out of the deal earlier this month after a series of kidnappings of opposition activists. Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Community: Together In Mission 2014

first_imgHome of the Week: Unique Pasadena Home Located on Madeline Drive, Pasadena Business News A tremendous “thank you” from the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Community hearts, to all the families who so generously donated to the 2013 Together In Mission campaign. The church extends its congratulations, for reaching the goal of $74,657 and even passed it! The additional funds will be returned to the parish for use in its ministries and are not subject to Archdiocese assessment which is a big advantage for the church. The church is blessed to have 350 families donate to this wonderful outreach within the Archdiocese. The theme of the Together In Mission campaign for 2014 is “love your neighbor.” It seems to totally embrace the teachings of Pope Francis. Each one of its parishioners can simply say yes to help its neighboring parishes and schools in this way. Everyone can donate, the size of the donation is not the most important thing. It shows that everyone do care about helping others. Due to various financial circumstances, the church had 200 fewer families participate these past two years. This year, everyone is praying that more families feel God calling them to participate, and do it with their heart. For the parishioners that generously donated last year to the Together In Mission campaign, they will receive a letter asking that they donate again this year. Please respond with a generous pledge to support the ministries, programs and services provided by the parishes and schools that receive these funds. Kindly indicate Assumption Church as your parish on this pledge form. Those parishioners who have not donated in the past will have a wonderful opportunity to do so on the weekend of February 22nd and 23rd when the church will have its in-pew solicitation. Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary will give a heartfelt welcome to one of its own parishioners, Meg Samaniego, who is the Principal at St. Bernard’s School in Glassell Park, which is dependent on these funds to provide children with a Catholic education.Let’s make it as everyone’s goal here at Assumption to increase each of the parishioner’s participation rate as a way of showing that each one is truly loving and generous in this parish. May God bless everyone and once again the church extends its heartfelt thanks!Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Community, 2640 E. After Ithaca College student’s death, IC warns of fraudulent fundraising page

first_imgDavid Maley, director of public relations at Ithaca College, said in an emailed statement, “The GoGetFunding page is not affiliated with Ithaca College and we are neither the creator nor owner of that campaign. We have reached out to GoGetFunding to inform them of this and demand that this page be removed and any donated funds be returned to the donors, as it is not authorized by the Perkins family and we have no idea who created it.”The page on GoGetFunding.com had raised $50 as of 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 5.A false fundraising page on GoGetFunding.com. Ithaca College said the page is not affiliated with the college and has not been authorized by the Perkins family. (Screenshot)For people who do want to contribute, Maley confirmed that there is a legitimate GoFundMe page put together by colleagues of Enoch Perkins in the Office of Public Safety and is authorized by the family.According to the GoFundMe page, the donations will help with funeral expenses and other associated costs.“We know there are many people who love and care for the Perkins family and want to know what they can do to help them during this extremely difficult time. We are hoping this will ease some of the burden that the family is experiencing. Any donation is appreciated. The funds will go directly to the family,” a statement on the page reads. The legitimate page can be found here.Featured image: The image shown at the top of the story is from GoGetFunding.com and depicts the fraudulent fundraising page. However, the college has sent out a warning that one of the fundraisers is fraudulent. On Monday morning, 19-year-old Kelly Perkins was killed in a car crash in Caroline. The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office said Perkins lost control of her car on Valley Road in the snowy conditions while she was on her way to school. Perkins was in her first year at Ithaca College and was the daughter of longtime Ithaca College employees Enoch and Debbie Perkins, the college said in a message to the community Monday.Following the news, a fundraiser was launched on GoGetFunding.com alleging to be for Perkins’ funeral costs. It states it was posted by Ithaca College. However, Ithaca College is warning anyone looking to contribute to the family that this page is fake. How banking comparison sites impact consumer search and your website

first_img continue reading » Comparison websites’ role in the marketing of bank, credit union and other financial service continues to evolve. These websites, which frequently enjoy better traction with Google and other search engines than banking sites themselves, already straddle an unusual range of roles from advisory and rankings for consumers to editorial to paid-promotion for brands. Their increasingly central nature to digital sales of banking products is now being augmented by the beginning of another role: direct sales partnership with financial institutions.Comparison websites for financial services are a growing subset of the trend of comparison websites in general. Among the better-known ones in the U.S. are NerdWallet, Credit Karma, Bankrate.com, WalletHub, The Points Guy, The Ascent (a banking-oriented site operated by The Motley Fool), The Balance, Finder.com, and ValuePenguin, DepositAccounts, MagnifyMoney and CompareCards (all four of which are owned by LendingTree, itself a leading online marketplace lender). There are others, such as FindABetterBank, operated by Novantas, the banking data and consulting firm, and Wise Bread. All of the foregoing sites are national in scope. There are also sites operated by nonprofit organizations, such as Consumers’ Checkbook, a family of sites that compare banks and many other types of local businesses in seven metropolitan areas, including Washington, D.C., as well as a national edition. Allianz Global Investors buys UK road project bonds

first_imgAllianz GI bought bonds issued by Amey Lagan Roads Financial, as well as restructuring its debt. The project includes a 27-year maintenance period.Allianz GI this week launched its UK infrastructure debt fund, with backing from Nippon Life. The fund will raise up to £500m for long-term core UK infrastructure and is aimed at small and mid-sized pension funds.Deborah Zurkow, Allianz Global Investors’ CIO for infrastructure debt, told IPE sister publication IP Real Estate that, having seen “early movers” in the sector prefer separately managed accounts, the time was now right to offer a product to smaller investors looking to join pools and match long-term liabilities.Zurkow said increased demand from UK pension funds would ultimately lead to more liquidity.Allianz has launched the fund 18 months after it created an infrastructure debt team. Allianz Global Investors has bought £130m (€163m) of bonds on a UK infrastructure project. The manager said it bought the bonds – on the Northern Ireland DBFO2 public-private partnership – for third-party investors including UK pension funds and Allianz group entities.Earlier this year, the Telent pension fund became the first UK scheme to enter an infrastructure debt platform using listed project bonds, using Allianz GI to invest in Scotland’s motorway improvements scheme. The £250m DBFO2 motorway project began in 2007.last_img read more
