Venus Williams upset by world No.49 in Silicon Valley Classic quarter-final

first_imgVenus Williams crashed out of the Silicon Valley Classic after a straight sets loss to Greece’s Maria Sakkari in the quarter-final of the tournament. It was a huge upset as Sakkari beat Venus 6-4, 7-6(2).Sakkari, who is 15 years junior to the 38-year-old Venus fought back remarkably after her more decorated opponent took an early 3-0 lead in the first set. Venus in fact was even up by 5-3 but could not capitalise on her lead against a relentless Sakkari.Venus had reached the final of two Grand Slams last year but is yet to cross the third round hurdle at a tournament since March.Sakkari on the other hand, needed an hour and 43 minutes to beat Williams and saved two set points in the second set on way to the win.
