Photo credit: GIS NewsIndian High Commissioner to Dominica Mala Mishra said the Nature Isle is the ideal country to market a new form of tourism that has the potential to boost the struggling sector.Mishra said India is willing to partner with Dominica in that regard. He said a delegation could soon visit Dominica to discuss ways to get the initiative off the ground.“We use a lot of humble plants to generate medicines and we make medicines, we produce them in India and export them in large quantities. We also run medical tourism or wellness tourism where we offer a lot of treatments in spas. I think Dominica could be an ideal location in the Caribbean to market wellness tourism and you can add that as a very important tourism product in Dominica and you can really do well,” he said.Mishra said plans are underway to bring a delegation from India to identify the plants to start the project.“The delegation will develop some kind of laboratory and then manufacture the plants not only to be used in Dominica but other parts of the region,” Mishra added. Top Kenyan official in court over Rio kit ‘theft’

first_imgTwo other NOCK officials, vice-chairman Pius Ochieng and secretary-general Francis Kinyili Paul, were also charged with fraudulently acquiring the Team Kenya kit from Nike.Controversy kicked off Kenya’s Olympics this summer when athletes appeared at the opening ceremony in mismatched gear because those provided by kit sponsor Nike had gone missing. Dozens of boxes of the gear later turned up in a raid on Kenya’s Olympics headquarters.Further embarrassment ensued when it emerged someone had forgotten to book a plane ticket for javelin world champion Julius Yego — who went on to win Olympics silver — while 200m sprinter Carvin Nkanata’s accreditation was submitted late meaning he almost missed his race.A parliamentary probe into the mismanagement of the Games was told in September how $20,000 was wasted as officials booked rooms for President Uhuru Kenyatta and the sports cabinet secretary aboard a cruise ship which were never used.Despite the scandals Kenya scooped 13 medals, including six gold, in its best performance at the Olympics.Share on: WhatsApp Kenyatta sends off the Olympics team. A kit scandal has hit the team after the games.Nairobi, Kenya | AFP | The chairman of Kenya’s Olympic committee appeared in court on Tuesday after police uncovered boxes of Nike kits at his apartment which had gone missing during the Rio Games.Bernard Ekumbo is the latest official from the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) to be arrested over the scandal, one of several which overshadowed Kenya’s best performance at a Games. He was arrested on Monday during a raid on his apartment in which boxes of Nike wear were found, including swimming and athletics gear.Ekumbo was not charged and prosecutors requested he be held in custody to give them more time to complete their investigation into theft, abuse of office and neglect of official duty.In September Kenya’s Rio Olympics manager Stephen Soi was charged with four counts of stealing more than $250,000 (235,000 euros) destined for athletes and officials in Brazil.last_img read more

BBC apologises for confusing Imran Khan with Wasim Akram

first_imgBy Aditi Khanna London, Jul 26 (PTI) The BBC has issued an apology for confusing Pakistani cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan with his former teammate Wasim Akram in its election-related coverage.During its flagship night-time news show, Newsnight, BBC2 showed footage of former left-arm pacer Akram instead of right-handed all-rounder Khan as he emerged as the frontrunner in the Pakistani general elections. At the end of the programme, presenter Evan Davis said: “We made a mistake in our opening tonight. The footage we showed was of the cricketer Wasim Akram not Imran Khan.””Don’t know how that happened, sincere apologies for that.”Both Akram and Khan are well-known faces of Pakistan cricket. Khan, who retired from the sport in 1992, had led the country to victory at the 1992 Cricket World Cup, Pakistan’s first and only victory in the competition. He has since moved on to lead the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, which emerged as the single-largest party in the elections held yesterday.Akram, meanwhile, has remained linked to cricket since his retirement and spends much of his time commentating on the game.”We’d like to reiterate the sincere apology we made on air last night for an error that occurred during the programme, a BBC spokesperson said.”We are looking into how this mistake happened and will be tightening our processes on Newsnight to prevent an incident like this happening again,” the spokesperson added.Viewers were quick to pick up on the error on social media, with one saying on Twitter: Let me guess your researcher just googled Pakistani cricketer assuming they all look alike eh?advertisementBack in April, the BBC was similarly caught out for mistakenly referring to Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a live news broadcast of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in London. The Sri Lankan President was seen disembarking from his car at the entrance of Buckingham Palace to join the other heads of government for the CHOGM launch hosted by Queen Elizabeth II when the BBC host said: Modi, the Prime Minister of India since May 2014 arriving at Buckingham Palace.
