Portmore Urged to Develop 10-Year Plan

Portia Simpson Miller, has challenged the leaders and citizens of Portmore to develop a 10-year plan for the municipality, which must be aligned to the National Development Plan: Vision 2030.Mrs. Simpson Miller said the steps and strategies in the attainment of that Portmore Vision 2030, must involve broad-based community consultation. She said that the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development stands ready to support the plan.The Prime Minister was addressing a civic ceremony at the Power of Faith Ministries, Portmore Mall on June 28, where she was presented with the Key to Portmore in honour of her invaluable contribution and service in assisting the area to achieve municipal status while serving as Minister of Local Government in 2003.The event was the highlight of a week of activities to commemorate the municipality’s 10-year anniversary.[RELATED: PM Appeals to Citizens of Portmore to Reject Violence]The Prime Minister commended the citizens of Portmore for working closely with the Government to achieve the municipal status they desire.She recalled that as Local Government Minister, she was given a mandate by the people to ensure that the area would be accorded the honour and recognition that it deserved.“I took that people’s mandate seriously and I delivered on that promise, working with the Members of Parliament and you the citizens of Portmore,” she said.“When we consult, when the people agree and say what they want and work with their representative, nothing can stop that power. Portmore is a clear example,” she noted.She said that the Portmore municipal model stands as a symbol of what can be achieved through effective community organisation and participation. This citizen involvement, she said, is at the heart of the local government process and cannot be allowed to die.“Every developed society in the world has a strong local government system. It is the community, which builds the society. The community is therefore the building block of the nation. You are well advanced in that regard and I congratulate you,” she stated.Several members of the Diplomatic Corps; Councillors; Members of Parliament; Government officials and scores of students and community members attended the event, which was celebrated with pomp and pageantry.There were marching bands heralding the Prime Minister’s arrival and a guard of honour mounted by members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).
