26-year-old Georgia native and wilderness guide Seth Orme was out hiking in Franklin, N.C. one afternoon when he started picking up little pieces of trash along the way. The crew hiking alongside him followed suit, and soon they found themselves with a pound of trash collectively. Orme thought about all of the litter living on our trail systems and wondered whether anyone had ever attempted to clean it up. One year later, during the summer of 2015, he decided to act. He set out on a journey with two friends to remove as much trail trash as possible while thru-hiking. Orme and two friends collected over 1,000 pounds of litter from the Appalachian Trail. They are continuing that mission on the Pacific Crest Trail this year. Each human generates on average around 4.7 pounds of waste each day, creating 750 million tons of garbage annually. With national park visitation in 2015 coming in at an all-time high at 307.2 million visits around the country last year alone, the outdoors are presented with a new set of challenges. Orme and his crew, aptly named Team Packing it Out, hope that by acting as outdoorsmen should and engaging the Leave No Trace ethic of packing out what you pack in on your adventures, that leading by example will create a lasting ripple effect.“We’re seeing continued increase in trail use with ‘A Walk in the Woods’ coming out last year and Cheryl Strayed’s ‘Wild’ which had similar effects for the PCT,” says Leave No Trace Education Director Ben Lawhon. “That leads to a lot of impact and certainly increased litter.”It was litter that initially sparked Orme to call up lifelong friend Joe Denhard whom he’d known since 8th grade and kayaked the Mississippi River with a few years earlier. He told him he wanted to clean as much trash as he could while thru-hiking the A.T. that summer. Denhard was in for the five-month challenge, and together they set out with a sea-kayaking guide Orme met a few years earlier, Paul Twedt.“I knew at that point in my life it was going to take something more, a bigger reason for me to quit my life for five months,” says Orme. “This idea had a strong enough pull for me. What if there is no trash? What if I can help?”On the eight-mile approach trail to Springer Mountain, Ga., they collected 19 pounds of trash. “Shaking our heads, thinking ‘what are we doing?’ we just kept telling each other to stay positive, realistic, and humble about whatever was going to happen,” said Orme.At Appalachian Trail Days in Damascus, Va., they talked with the crew at Granite Gear, including Granite Gear vice president of sales and marketing Rob Coughlin. “I talk to a million hikers a year, but the ambition they took to collect a half ton of trash while thru-hiking is the greatest hiking accomplishment I’ve heard in recent history,” says Coughlin. “You have a lot of guys out there doing speed records and things like that, which is great, but to go out there and remove mattresses off the trail is going well above and beyond.”Granite Gear paid for the rest of their hike in 2015 and signed them as official athletes for 2016. They outfitted them before they hit the trail in May and will be joining them at several stops along the way to create short videos. Orme says they’re not using any new or high-tech gear for this hike and didn’t on the A.T. either. Their method is simple—use trash grabbers and keep an arsenal of trash bags and mesh nylon sacks to grab all visible trash. They stubbed toiled paper into the ground using their hiking poles and handed off full trash bags to day hikers leaving the trail with cars or emptied them in the nearest town’s trash cans and recycling centers. They weighed their findings each day using a small luggage scale.“With some of the situations we got into with trash, I’m so glad we were all there together. When you find 70 pounds of mattresses it would be tough to carry that out solo. It was ridiculously hard with three people,” said Orme.“Each person that picks up a piece of litter while out there inspires someone else to and someone else and so on. It changes our collective ethic about being outdoors,” said Orme.

Since Kickboxing LK opening in January 2009 it has gone from strength to strength under the expert eye of commonwealth, european and two weight professional world kickboxing champion and professional mixed martial arts champion Tommy ‘The Ghost’ Mc Cafferty. The club, now entering its fifth year, has already created a few success stories with members losing mass amounts of weight, gaining confidence and even picking up a few irish titles along the way, the club currently boasts two senior Irish full contact champions in Letterkenny’s own Brian Crossan and Lifford native Ronnie Brennan.Although the club has had a lot of success on the competative circuit it’s not all about that side of things. Tommy believes the bulk of the clubs members are there to keep fit and loose weight. “We have a lot of people that compete and our junior team is one of the best in the country at the minute but I find the vast majority of our members don’t fight or have no intention of fighting they just enjoy the training,” he says.“At the club you can two birds with the one stone, you are getting fit and losing weight but you are also learning a very good skill set for self defence.“In the normal classes there is a lot of cardio,core-work and a lot of padwork with people burning 800+ calories in the hour, the normal classes has no contact as we keep fighters classes seperate so people can get the most out of their training no matter what their goal is,we give people the choice of getting weigh-ins, body fat measurements and nutritional advice so they can keep track of their progress towards their goals but this isn’t compulsory.“The atmosphere in the club is relaxed and fun but everyone pushes hard and encourages each other.” The martial art of Muay Thai has also arrived – with people travelling from all over the North West for classes. For further details check outwww.tommymccafferty.comwww.facebook.com/kickboxinglkKICKBOXING LK CELEBRATES FIVE YEARS…OF KICKS! was last modified: January 5th, 2014 by John2Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:kickboxinglktommy mccafferty
Finn Valley poll-topper Martin Harley has paid tribute to his family and friends after he was given a huge endorsement by the people to continue as a county councillor.Public Harley increased his personal vote by 550 votes from his last outing five years ago.The Harley family suffered a personal tragedy when they lost their 19 year old daughter Kym in a road tragedy in late 2014. An emotional Mr Harley told Donegal Daily that he was “humbled” by the support he has received in recent weeks.“I am humbled. It’s been a very difficult four and a half years for the family including my wife Denise.“When I knocked on doors people told me that they were voting for Martin Harley no matter what party I was with and I appreciate that.“I am a Fine Gael man but I will help anybody no matter what their background,” he said. Councillor Harley said there was no question he was hurt by the manner in which Frank McBrearty was brought into the Fine Gael camp to run in this election.“I have absolutely no issue with Frank and I think he does great work in his area.“But I was upset at the manner in which another candidate was brought in. I was told nothing about those plans by the party. I heard it first from a friend by phone after it had been agreed. I was never consulted.“But I am a Fine Gael man and I will be actively looking at the results around the rest of the county to see where we are picking up seats,” he added. He added that he thought the possibility of a third Fine Gael seat in the Lifford/Stranorlar area is a “strong possibility.” “I think it will be very tight and it’s very hard to call.“As a person and a community worker I have so much time for Liam Doherty and the work he has done but I think Fine Gael have a strong chance of that last seat with Garvan Connolly.“It could be a long day and night and I wouldn’t rule out a recount,” he said.Poll-topper Martin Harley – “It’s been a tough few years” was last modified: May 27th, 2019 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:electionLiffordMartin HarleypollStranorlartopper
A Scoot Dreamliner. Photo: Scoot Scoot in just its first few years of operation has managed to raise the bar in the low cost travel market. From an entire fleet of twin aisle aircraft, a child free cabin plus plenty of seating options, the airline offered something for everyone at rock bottom prices. The airline then raised the bar again last year by being the first in the world to operate an entire fleet consisting only of brand new Boeing 787 Dreamliners. Last year AirlineRatings went on board to review Scoot’s inaugural 787 flight between Perth and Singapore See our video onboard the inaugural flight here. An energetic crew welcomed us on board and upon turning the corner to walk down the aisle, we were met with what can only be explained as “the funkiest” cabin lighting I’ve seen. It’s the sort of lighting that creates an energetic vibe and actually relaxes a nervous flyer. I was told that the lighting is only reserved for special flights and true to their word, on the return flight it was unfortunately back to the standard interior. Hopefully Scoot will change their policy on this and use this mood lighting on every flight as it is quite a unique experience for passengers. The CabinsThe seating in the Economy Class cabin features a 31-inch seat pitch and seat recline of 6 inch making it the greatest recline of any low cost carrier operating in the Asia Pacific area. The Scoot-in-Silence cabin ( where no children under 12 are permitted) is retained on the Dreamliner however, unlike on the old 777, there is no curtain, just a bulk head separating it from Economy Class. This cabin with its extra legroom (seats have a 35 inch pitch) is genius and sales prove that it is popular with the travelling public. I did have one concern on the Dreamliner however. There is a large area of space between the Scoot-in-Silence cabin and Economy where people can have a stretch. It’s also the perfect area for parents to pace back and forth with their upset babies and passengers in the quiet cabin did mention this on the return flight. Both Economy and Scoot-in-Silence cabins have in seat power but you need to pay $8 Singapore dollars to use it. At first I thought this was a little cheeky, but the reality is that this is a low cost carrier that offers one way fares as low as $129 Australian dollars and the options are there for a reason. If you want more comfort and entertainment, then you pay for it, otherwise, enjoy your cheap fare, be organised and power up your device first.Scoot Business Class or “Scoot Biz” as it’s called, is not your typical Business Class, it’s more of a no frills Premium Economy and it’s at this point that you need to remember you only paid $400-$500 for this “Business Class” not $2,000 and keep your expectations in line. The seats, covered in a black leather have a 38 inch seat pitch, 8 inch recline and come with complimentary in seat power, in flight entertainment (to be streamed to your own device), and an extendable leg rest.Water is offered when you board the aircraft and passengers are served a complimentary hot meal with one beverage (alcoholic or non alcoholic) but after that everything else is buy on board. There are no blankets, pillows or amenity kits. FOODThere’s lots of different options when it comes to food depending on what you want to pay. My opinion is that if you are going to order food – pay for the premium meal selection at the time of booking and get the better product. I’ve mentioned it in previous reviews and still feel that the food on Scoot is the airlines only real let down. Again, it needs to be remembered that this is a low cost carrier and it’s not about the food it’s about safety and value – which Scoot excels in, but if you’re a foody – you’ve been warned.NOTE: Some menu changes have occurred since this review, please see the latest menu and options here.Passengers also need to remember that this is a low cost carrier and therefore water also needs to be purchased on board. My suggestion is to bring empty water bottles through security with you and fill them up in the departure lounge (where you can) before boarding. Business Class light meal with a complimentary wine. All other purchases outside this must be paid for.The standard hot meal choice for Economy and Scoot-in-Silence passengers who have opted not to upgrade to a premium meal. IN FLIGHT ENTERTAINMENT WiFi is available and movies/TV shows can be streamed to your own device from the onboard library ( all for a fee).. We gave the WiFi a go and were impressed with the speed. At times it was slow but ultimately, provided you aren’t downloading big files, it worked well for some basic communciation from the sky and the posting of photos to social media. OVERALL EXPERIENCEThe open space, higher humidity and overall quiteness of the Dreamliner leave you feeling a lot more refreshed when compared to spending the equivalent amount of time on any other aircraft. Scoot, with it’s large twin aisle aircraft, WiFi, generous seat recline, multitiude of options for legroom and consistently cheap fares and excellent customer service phone line (with real people!) are what makes this a world leading low cost carrier and AirlineRatings.com Best Low Cost Carrier award winner for Asia Pacific year after year.Suggested Read: Our world’s best airline award winners.Sharon flew as a guest of Scoot in 2015emailtwitter

Whether you’re in the past or in the future, to truly sell your production, you need to make your characters look like they belong in their time and place.Appropriate SetsImage from Looper via TriStar Pictures.Like wardrobe choices, set dressing becomes another big factor to keep an eye on as you transition between time periods. There are big decisions, like making something look futuristic — or like a western frontier — but there also small details to consider, like power lines and cars in the background that can become distractions when you’re working with conflicting periods. Finding creative ways to minimize uncontrollable elements is a must.HUDsDepending on the sophistication of your time travel apparatus, you may have some opportunities to create flashy special effects.
