Troy High School class of ‘48 reunites

A loaf of bread cost 14 cents, a pound of hamburger meat was 45 cents and a two-pound bag of coffee was a whopping 85 cents.Bikinis were becoming fashionable and television sets were appearing in more homes.And, down south in Troy, Alabama, the Troy High School Class of 1948 was ready to step out into a big world of wonder. By Jaine Treadwell Sanders also remembered one special teacher, Miss Roxie Dunbar.“She was a pretty lady with real white skin. She loved pansies and she wore them as often as she could,” Sanders said. “In her class, we painted pansies and I loved them, too. Now, the faces have been taken off pansies and that’s sad. Pansies need faces for us to enjoy.”Sanders said, she, like most of her classmates “took D.O.- Diversified Occupation.” The students took classes in the morning and worked in the afternoon. Sanders worked at Edge Hospital as a nurse’s aide.Sanders said, in the aftermath of WWII, many of the young men in the Troy High School Class of 1948 were anxious to answer Uncle Sam’s call.“We have a long list of veterans in our class,” she said. “They were proud to serve.”Seated nearby where the THS Class of 1948 was enjoying renewing old friendships, members of the Mercer College basketball team were enjoying Julia’s buffet.“One of our classmates was talking with the players and told them that we all graduated high school here in Troy 70 years ago and that made us all way past 80 years,” Sanders said. “He told the players to take a good look at us because, in 70 years, that’s how they would look.”To the delight of the classmates, the young Mercer man said, “If we look that good, we’ll be in good shape.” And that was a high note on which to end the THS Class of 1948 reunion. British firms make strides to catch up EU on employing over-50s

They start from a relatively weak record in comparison with othercountries in the European Union, but have been making strong efforts to catchup. For the past six or seven years, there has been a considerable shift inemployers’ attitudes to using the experience and skills of older workers. This is partly because employers have increasingly come to value thereliability, accumulated experience, maturity and people skills of olderworkers and partly out of necessity because the supply of younger workers isdecreasing. Cranet shows that 10% of organisations in Britain now specifically targetworkers aged over 50 compared with 6% of organisations in other EU countries.In the UK, 12. 6% of private employers are actively targeting older workers,compared to 4.2% of public sector employers. Across the EU, a similar pattern is apparent, with 6.7% of private employerstargeting older workers compared to 3.6% of their public counterparts. Thisdifference may reflect the reality that the public sector already contains arelatively high proportion of older workers. The Government has led the way in championing the cause of older workers butthe figures give it further food for thought. Its New Deal 50+ has been a considerable success. By May 2001, just under40,000 people returned to work under the scheme, easing skills shortages inparts of the labour market. Yet, there is still a good deal of age discriminationaround.
