Moreno gives his view on Matthews

first_imgTEMPE, Ariz. – The fact that there is no resolution in sight to the Gary Matthews Jr. situation led to the statement released by owner Arte Moreno on Saturday evening. An investigation last week alleged that Matthews was a customer of an Internet pharmacy that has illegally distributed human growth hormone. A later story on Sports Illustrated’s Web site revealed what Matthews allegedly purchased, when he purchased it and where it was delivered. “Specifically, the Angels have asked (Matthews) to come forward and fully answer all questions surrounding the recent allegations against him. The organization continues to expect that this matter will come to a quick conclusion.” The statement certainly was not to infer that the Angels have started to turn their back on their new center fielder and are siding with Major League Baseball instead. “We’re supportive of our player and we’re protective of the game and protective of our brand,” Mead said Sunday. “Gary’s situation, he has now hired counsel to look into it. That’s a personal issue. But (the Angels) have been the focus either directly or indirectly since this issue started. “How you measure it, we don’t know. “We pride ourselves on trying to do the right thing. We pride ourselves in taking care of our players and providing support as well and there have been many conversations this week with Gary and with his agent. It just reached a point where we need to let our fan base know that we’re focused on the big picture here as well, and for nobody to lose sight of that. The big picture includes the Angels and the game of baseball.” Moreno’s statement was intended to be the team’s an all-encompassing view on the subject, according to Angels spokesman Tim Mead. “This week, the Angels and I were disappointed to learn that the name of one of our players, Gary Matthews Jr., has been allegedly associated with an investigation into the sale of performance enhancing substances by an Internet pharmacy in Florida,” Moreno said in the statement. “Both the Angels and I have strongly encouraged Gary to cooperate with any authority investigating this matter. center_img Matthews’ new high-profile attorney, Robert Shapiro, said Matthews will only make a statement once all investigations are complete. Anderson debut Garret Anderson is expected to make his Cactus League debut today at home against the Oakland Athletics. Manager Mike Scioscia said Anderson’s delay in playing wasn’t because of any specific problem, it was just to give his left fielder some time to round into shape. Off the mound Francisco Rodriguez and Justin Speier each pitched in a simulated game, throwing about 20 pitches each. Speier is ready for Cactus League action, but Rodriguez will pitch in one more simulated game before making his debut. Scott Shields, who has a sore right shoulder, is expected to make his first appearance in a game at the same time as Rodriguez. John Lackey will have a bullpen session today, his first since missing five days with bronchitis. Lackey is scheduled to start Thursday. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations!
